The Kent Eleven, following up their brilliant success over Yorkshire earlier in the week, showed some capital cricktt against Lancashire, at Manchester on Thursday last and two succeeding days. With the addition of L^rJ Harris and Mr. Mackinnon, the southern team was a fairly representative one, and though Lancashire had not quite its full strength, it was a creditable per formance to make such a good fight, the latter having at the finish a majority of only 42 runs. The victory of the Lancastrians was in a great measure due to the brilliant play of Briggs. Lord Harris missed him the first ball hf? had in tho match, but with this exception lie made no mistake. Altogether he contributed 173 out of 381 scored by Lancashire from the bat, and his second innings in particular was a fine display of hitting. He was at the wickets two hours and twenty-five minutes, and out of 180 runs made while he was in, was credited with 115, in which Mrere one five and thirteen fours. Mr. Hornby’s second score of 61 was also the result of good hitting: His figures included nine fours, a three, and three twos. Mr. R. S. Jones was the chief scorer on the side of Kent. In the second innings he was of great use, and while he was in 135 runs were added to the score. On the first day, Mr. Christopherson took six Larcashire wickets at a cost of only 41 runs. The Surrey eleven added another to their successes of this season at Derby on Friday, when theydefeated afairly representative team of Derbyshire by an innings and 62 runs. The ill-luck which has followed the home county of late years in the toss changed for this occasion, at least, and Derbyshire had the advantage of going in first on a good wicket. Though Shacklock, Wood-Sims, andi.Mr. Docker, gave their side an excellent start, the tail made a poor display. In the second innings, too, the eleven showed to even worse advantage, and Beaumont and Lohmann bowled with such success that the seventh wicket fell with the total at 31. Surrey did not begin very well, and it was not until Mr. W. W. Read and Maurice Read got together that a stand was made. The latter had considerable luck in the attain ment of his 51, but the amateur never gave a chance during his long innings. He was in while 229 runs were scored, and his 123 was a brilliant exhibition of cricket —one in every way worthy of his high reputation. His figures included fourteen fours, seven threes, and thirteen twos. Beaumont’s bowling was again very success ful for Surrey. He took eight Derbyshire wickets for 67 runs. D e r b y s h ir e .
