Cricket 1885
MAY28,1885, CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. 149 OXFORD UNIVERSITY v. LANCASHIRE. Though only moderately represented, Lancashire was able to claim a majority of 50 runs at the finish of this match—twelve- a-side—played at Oxford on Thursday last and two following days. Rain interfered with the progress of the game materially, and the wicket was against the batsmen. Under such conditions the superior bowling of the County enabled it to have a slight advantage throughout. Barlow, Watson, and Nash were all very difficult, and, indeed, none of the University batsmen, except Messrs. Brain, Page, and Buckland, made a long stay in either innings. The best bowl- iog for Oxford was done by Messrs. Bastard and Cochrane. The former proved very effective in both innings. In the match, altogether he was credited with ten wickets at a cost of 108 runs, L ancashire . First Innings. Mr. A. The rain which prevailed everywhere at the close of last week rained this impor tant match played at Sheffield Park on Thursdaylast andtwo following days. This ill- luck is the more to be regretted as it is the only occasion on which Shaw’s Eleven are likely—though there is some talk of a fixture in the North—to appear this summer. Con sidering the number of important fixtures on the same days, Lord Sheffield had collected a strong eleven, and with fine weather the game would have been very interesting. As it was some good cricket was shown on both sides despite the wet wicket, and the match was finally left in a very even condition. Maurice Read and Briggs were representing their respective counties, and as a con sequence Alfred Shaw and Lillywhite had to play to compkte the Australian eleven. Frank Hearne showed fine cricket for Lord Sheffield’s team on the opening day. Going in first he made 62 out of 108 while he was in—a capital performance against such good bowling. For Shaw’s team Ulyett hit with even more than his wonted vigour. Shrews bury played, on the other hand, with more care than usual, and he was altogether three hours and twenty minutes at the wicket for his 28. The best batting in the innings, though, was that of Flowers. His 40 (not out) was a steady and sound display of cricket. Just at the finish some capital batting was shown by Messrs. Grace and Newham, who were not out when the stumps were finally drawn. L ord S heffield ’ s E leven . First Innings. Mr. W. G. Grace, Shrewsbury, b Barnes F. The game is easily learned, and a match can be played with every detail the same as on the cricket-field. One can play it, though two gives greater interest. An excellent amusement for winter evenings and wet days. Testimonials from Lord Harris, Mr. A. G . Steel, and many other eminent cricketers have been received.
