Cricket 1885
146 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, h a y 28,1885. and he took part in both the matches at Melbourne against Shaw’s team, as well as in one of the two played at Sydney. The best performance ever credited to him with the bat was accomplished in the New Year’s match at Melbourne against the English players who have recently arrived home, and his first ssore of 82 was got without a mistake. His most notable record as a wicket-keeper was also achieved against Shaw’s team. His show behind the sticks for the Eleven of Australia last February was indeed exceptionally fine. In all he had a hand in the downfall of six English wickets, and Lillywhite asserted after the match that his effective wicket-keeping was the principal cause of the defeat of Shaw’s team on that occasion. Jarvis has a very free and attractive style of batting. He hits well all round, and were he to cure himself thoroughly of the propensity to get a ball round to leg he would be a still more dan gerous bat. Though he is hardly at home on a slow wicket, when the ground is hard he is almost a certai i scorer, and when set gets runs rapidly. Though we are hardly inclined to think that he would prove to be better than Blackham as a wicket-keeper in a long trial, he has certainly shown himself to be one of the very best stumpers of the present time. The ease with which he took Spofforth for the Combined team proved that on his day be has no superiors. The high opinion of his abilities expressed by the members of Shaw’s team excites a hope that he may again be seen on English grounds. THE DERBYSHIRE COLTS’ MATCH. E l e v e n v. T w e n ty -tw o C o lt s & C aptain . The Colts had the best of the draw in this match played at Derby on Monday and Tuesday. The ground, owing to the rain, was all in favour of the bowlers, and as a consequence the scoring on both sides was low. T his E l e v e n . First Innings. Second Innings. F. H. Kent secured a highly creditable victory over Yorkshire, at Sheffield, on Tuesday last, winning by no less than eight wickets. This success was the more noteworthy from the fact that the victorious eleven was, in the absence of Lord Harris, Rev. R. T. Thornton, and M. C. Kemp, certainly not the best that Kent could place in the field. The chief credit of this achievement was due to A. Hearne, the young professional whoso bowling proved so extraordinarily effective on his first appearance last year. He bowls s’ow round with a break from leg, and again proved very difficul t, none of the Yorksliire- men, with the exception of Hall, playing him with any confidence. In the match altogether he took thirteen wicke'£ at a cost of only 48 runs—very remarkable figures, particularly for a young cricketer against such a side as that of Yorkshire. Hall went in first in the second innings of Yorkshire, and was not out scoring 32 out of 76 from the bat. The batting of Mr. Patterson, Frank and George Hearne, for Kent, deserves conspicnous mention. Frank Hearne’s 37 was the highest score of the match. The wicket was slow from recent rains, which will account for the small run-getting. Y o r k s h ir e . First Innings. Ulyett, c G. G.
