Cricket 1885

138 CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. may 21 , i m : MARYLEBONE 0. & G. v. KENT. Kent succeeded in winning the first match of the season on Tuesday, when its eleven defeated a moderate team of M.C.C. & G. by six wickets. Lord Harris was not able to play for his County, and in his absence Mr, M. C Kemp acted as captain. Mr. W . H . Patterson was also an absentee, but otherwise Kent was well represented. Messrs. Thornton, Tonge, Christopherson, and the brothers G. G. and F. Hearne, all did good service with the bat for Kent. The most noteworthy feature in the match, though, was the brilliant hitting of Mr. Hornby. It was the first appearance of the Lancashire captain in London this season, and everyone will be pleased to see him commence so well. He was highest scorer in both innings, and in the second he made 84 out of 105 got while he was at the wickets. He Was missed twitie, the first time when he had made five, the second when his score was 63. His hitting, though, despite these blemishes, showed all its old vigour. But for him the Marylebone eleven would have made a very poor show. Mr. Tonge batted in very promising style in the second nnings of Kent. M.C.C. First Innings. Second Innings Mr. A. N. Hornby, b H. SURREY v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Surrey’s third match resulted in another decisive victory, the eleven, with Mr. J. Shuter absent, defeating a fairly represen tative team of Leicestershire at the Oval by an innings and 5 3 runs. Messrs. Read and Roller put on 1 1 2 runs while they were together, and later in the innings Woodhit ex tremely well, carrying out his bat for a most creditable score of 5 7 . The two amateurs both played thoroughly good cricket, though Mr. Read got his runs faster. In his 94 were sixteen fours, three threes, and eight twos. Mr. Roller’s 86, in which were eight fours, four three3, and eight twos, were made with hardly a mistake of any kind. The most noticeable feature on the Leicester shire side was the very fine cricket shown by Wheeler in the second innings. He went in with the score at 1 8 for one wicket and was ninth, out with the total at 1 8 5 . While he was in 1 6 7 runs were added, and of these he had made 1 0 7 without a chance. His defence was excellent, while he lost no opportunity of hitting. His play was the more creditable considering the hopeless state of the game for his side. In his figures were fourteen fours, three threes, and eleven twos. Maurice Read made his first appearance in the Surrey eleven since the Australian tour. S u r r e y , Mr. M. P.
