Cricket 1885
MAT 21,1885. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 138 NOTTS v, SUSSEX. The Nottinghamshire eleven won their first match of the season on Saturday, when they defeated Sussex, on the Trent Bridge Ground, with nine wickets to spare. Neither side was fully representative. Sussex were without the valuable services of Messrs. Whit feld and Newham, while Notts had to find a substitute for Arthur Shrewsbury, whodid not arrive from Australia until Saturday night. The Sussex eleven made a very creditable show in the first hands, and chiefly through the good batting of Jesse Hide and Humphreys, who were a long time together, were able to claim a lead of 34 runs at the end of an innings. When they went in a second time, though, the play was very disappointing. No-one but Mr. Ellis and Quaife, who played good cricket for his twenty-two, made any stand against the bowling of Attewell and Barnes, and seven of the eleven together were only responsible for eighteen runs. Notts had 115 to win when they opened their second innings, and this task gave them little trouble. Gunn and Scotton both played in the best form, and 101 had been scored before the former, who had not given a chance, was well caught at point. Barnes and ScOtton added the 14 runs still left, and Notts won with the loss of only one wicket. Barnes, Flowers, Atte well and Scotton, who had just returned from Australia, were all of great use either with bat or ball. S u s s e x . The Hampshire eleven were at tne outset evidently not at home on the last wicket, and only one of them was able to get double figures in the first innings. W hen they went in a second time they made a better show, but this was mainly due to the good play of Messrs. Bonham- Carter and the Oxonian, F. W. Pember, who contributed more than _ one half of the total from the bat. All tne first seven Surrey batsmen obtained double figures, though Messrs. Shuter, Roller and Diver were the principal contributors to the big total of 461. Mr. Shuter, though he was not quite at his ease for a few overs, w_nen he settled down, played in his very bes form, and .his hitting all-round was par ticularly good. His innings was altogether free from a mistake. In his 135 were one five and twenty fours. Messrs. Diver and Boiler, too, both got their runs by good cricket. The latter made his first appearance for the county this year, and he has rarely of late shown to better advantage. He was unlucky enough to play on when he was only eight short of three figures. Lohmann again bowled.with extraordinary success for Surrey. In all he was credited with twelve Hampshire wickets at a cost of twenty-mne runs. These are remarkable figures. XXIII. MID DLESEX COLTS AND CAPTAIN. Some very fair cricket was shown by the young players of Middlesex in this annual match, played at Lord’s, on Thursday and Friday last. Though Marylebone had a very weak batting side, the bowling was good enough to test the merits of the Colts, and the latter made on the whole a very credit able display. West batted in capital form for his 53. He hit well all round, and alto gether his cricket was of a very promising kind. In the second innings Mr. J. S. Hay- craft played in good style for his 31 not out. The best batting on the side of M.C.C. was that of F.D.Quinton,one of the Marlborough eleven of 1883. In the second innings he was two hours and a half at the wickets for his 62, a capital performance with so many in the field. The game was drawn. M.C.C. First Inningp. Mr. J. S.
