Cricket 1885

130 CRIOKET; A WEEKLY EECOED OF THE GAME. m a y 2 1 ,i885. their stand which saved Surrey from defeat. When Abel went in 153 were still wanting to win with only three wickets to fall, and their partnership, which was productive of 108 runs, fairly robbed Yorkshire of a victory. Though he was not able to play in some matches last year owing to illness, he thoroughly maintained his form of 1883, Opening the season auspiciously with a well- got ninety-three against Essex, he batted well throughout, though naturally more suc cessful in the later fixtures, when he had recovered bis health. Though he had a very creditable average of 19.11 for thirty- four completed innings, his triumphs were not merely confined to the bat. Both in the field and with the ball he was, in addition, of considerable use. On more than one occasion his bowling was of great assis tance, and several times he was able to separate batsmen who had got thoroughly well set. Abel is now' a really good bat. He has great defence, and for his size—he is only 5ft. 5in. in height—hits hard, his cutting and driving on the off side being very clean. He bowls slow round-arm, with rather a low delivery. At times he gets considerable work on from the off,_and on several occasions has proved of great use, as a change ; indeed, some good judges are inclined to think he might be more often utilised with advantage. He is, too, a very smart field, and at short slip has no superior at the present time. A keen little sports man and a thoroughly deserving fellow, Abel is respected by all classes of Surrey cricketers. Fi t Inn'ngs, F. Silcock, c Allport, b G unnery..........................15 N. To th e E ditor or “ C b ic k e t .” S ik ,—Through the medium of you valuable paper, I beg to call the attention o clubs usually playing on Victoria Park, to th ® very bad state of the ground this season, an“ to ask if there is not some way of gettinS same put right. The Government pay some thousands per year for the maintainance of the park, and I think it is a shame that such anice open space in the East End of London is not looked after better for cricketing purposes. I feel confident that many clubs would pay an extra 6d. or Is. per week to have the ground seen to, and the only way that I can see of getting a good piece of ground is by all Victoria Park Clubs signing a petition. I have no doubt that you will insert this, as it is the only means of getting any good play in Victoria Park.—I am, dear sir, yours truly, C. A. H. HIGHBURY v. ENFIELD. Played at Highbury on-May 2.
