Cricket 1884

74 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OE THE GAME, apml 24 , ism. bat, and I am told that his second innings at Adelaide, against Fifteen of South Australia, on the eve of the departure for this country, when he scored 73, not out, was a really ex cellent performance. L oud H arris does not, in cricket, do things by hahes, and an intim ation has already been issued that the decision of the conference at Lord’s, with regard to the enforce ment of the law regulating the dimensions of bats, will bei strictly carried out on Kentish grounds. In proof of this the follow ing circular has been issued by the Committee of the Kent County Club, “ At all County matches played in Kent a bat guage will be provided with which the umpire will be ready to measure all bats brought to them during intervals of cessation from play, and those passing the guage will be stamped.” T h e latsst official advices from under date of April 7, state that there is nothing new to add to what has al ready appeared in C rick e t on the subject of the Philadelphian cricketers. The team are hard at work in the gymnasium, but the season has been very backward, and my informant doubts if any outdoor practice will be had before the departure for England takes place on May 17. It is almost settled that D. S. Newhall will be unable to join the party. His place will bo taken by W. C. Morgan, 3rd Germantown C.C., and R. S. Newhall has been elected captain. The invitations for this team received from friends in England, indicate that the American amateurs will have a most enjoyable trip. T he annual general meeting of the Marylebone Clubwill be held at Lord’s on Wednesday, May 7, at 5.30 p.m. Viscount Lewisham and Messrs. A.W. Ridley, S. Bircham, A. W. L. Hemming, and A. Rutter have been nominated to fill the places of the four retiring members of the Committee, and the four securing the largest number of votes will be elected. The meeting is afterwards to be made special to consider some alterations in the rules proposed by Mr. A. Rut ter. The ninety-seventh anniversary dinner will be held the same evening at half past seven o’clock. The President elect for 1884 is, as I notified some weeks ago, the Earl of Winterton. F IX T U R E S .
