Cricket 1884

58 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. APRIL 17, 1884. T h e committee of the Melbourne Cricket Club, acting for the general body of the members, made the Hon. Ivo Bligh a wedding present in the shape of a massive silver claret-jug and salver, ^having the following in scription :—“ The Melbourne Cricket Club to the Hon. Ivo Bligh—a wed ding gift—10th February, 1884.” Mr. Bligh, in acknowledging the gift, and the kindly wishes that accom panied it, said that although the for tunes of war had not enabled that present to take the much wished for form of an “ urn,” he would ever prize the gift as a souvenir of a most enjoy able time spent in Australia—a time which was largely indebted for its enjoyable nature to the courteous and generous treatment which his team experienced at the hands of the mem bers of the M.C.C. and those engaged in the management of its affairs. I s e e it announced in the sporting papers that Mr. Arthur H. Wood, of Froyle Park, Alton, for some years secretary of the Hampshire Hunt, ■will succeed Mr. H. W. Deacon in the Mastership of tlieH.H., and that he has already engaged his huntsman and first and second whips. Mr. Wood is described as “ a prominent member of the Hants County Club.” As most cricketers in the South know, Mr. Wood is the captain of the Hampshire eleven. Stratford have performed with con siderable success, seem to have no lack of enterprise, to judge by recent events. Only recently Gr. Pannell, who played for the Surrey Colts, crossed the big drink to accept the post of professional to the Club, and now, according to the American Cricketer, its Committee are in correspondence with Alfred Shaw, to arrange, if possi ble, for the team he is to take to Aus tralia to stop at Pittsburgh for a game in September, on their way to the Colonies: T he latest information with regard to the visit of the Philadelphian Cricketers, will be found in another part of the paper, and there is little to add to what I wrote last. They are to play an eleven selected from the New York Clubs on Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10, at Nicetown, and this will be their only trial before their departure for England. The All New York team, which will include G. Lane, the Nottingham player, now professional to the Staten Island Club of New York, will be captained by Mr. Cyril Wilson, who played a few years ago for Somersetshire, and also donned flannels occasionally for the Maryle bone and Surrey Clubs.
