Cricket 1884

406 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. s e p t. 11, 1884. he season he has been singularly effective. Only last week for the North of England against the Australians at Nottingham he was credited with nine wickets for 48 runs, and his consistent success on the generally hard wickets prevalent this summer certainly entitles him to be considered as one of the best bowlers of the day. He is a right-hand round arm bowler, with a fairly high de livery. He breaks both ways, though mostly from leg, and as he invariably keeps an ex cellent length, he is usually successful— particularly on a sticky wicket. As a bats man he haa hardly as yet fulfilled the high expectations formed from his early play in the County eleven. He has, though, good defence, and as when set he can hit well all round, he has at times been of great use. He is a safe field anywhere. Like more than one of his comrades in the County Eleven, Attewell is also a very fair Association footballer. KENT. RESULTS OF MATCHES. Played 12; won 4, lost 6, drawn 2. Rain altogether ruined the return match between these Counties fixed to commence at the Oval, on Thursday last. Continu ous wet prevented any play on the first day and, as owing to the same cause the wickets were never pitched on Saturday, the game was really limited to five hours and three quarters on Friday. The wicket had of course suffered from the heavy downpour, and the scoring on both sides was below the average. Surrey, who won the toss, went in first and they were mainly indebted for their total of 110 to Mr. Read, his namesake the professional, and the Colt, Lohmann, who contributed 81 of 100 from the bat. Mr. Read was at fir»t rather lucky, but his was on the whole a good inningi considering the difficulty of the wicket. The ground played a little better when Yorkshire were in, and Ulyett and Hall made forty before the latter was bowled. Ulyett had made 36 of the 58 scored at the fall of the second wicket, but afterwards no stand was made till Emmett joined Grimshaw, and these two by good hitting added 38 runs to the score. When play ceased on Friday night, Surrey were thirteen behind, with all their wickets to fall. Rain prevented any play on Saturday, and as in the first fixture at Dewsbury, the game was drawn.
