Cricket 1884
SEPT. i, 1884, CRICKET; A WEEKLY REGORD OF THE GAME. 399 SUBEE-Y v. KENT. After an exciting finish the return match between these counties ended yesterday at the Oval in a drawn game. Rain prevented a commencement at the appointed time on Monday morning, and Surrey in -winning the to3S gained an advantage in batting first while the wicket was for a time easy. At the end of an innings they were 44 runs in hand, and the good play of Messrs. Key, Bowden, and Bead when they went in again enabled them still further to improve their position. Kent wanted 259 to win when they entered on their second innings at 12.45 yesterday, and with only four hours and a half left their chances of making them on a slow wicket were rather small. As a con sequence, their main object was to draw the game, and in this, mainly through the excellent play of Mr. Patterson, they succeeded. Mr. Patterson, who went in first, batted with the strictest care, never taking a liberty of any kind, and bent only upon keeping up his wicket. For tho four hours-and-a-half that remained he adhered solely to the defensive, and he played the game for his side thoroughly to the very last. Mr. Thornton lent him useful assistance, but the credit of the draw rested mainly with Mr. Patterson, and to o much praise cannot be bestowed on him for a very excellent perfor mance. Five minutes were left when the tenth man, Wootton, came in, tut he kept up his end and the match was drawn, Kent still wanting 107 to win with two wicket3 to fall SURRKY. First Innings.
