Cricket 1884

AUG. 28, 1884. CBICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 385 HW SURREY V. DERBYSHIRE. Surrey won its second match of the season with Derbyshire on Saturday at the Oval with seven wickets to spare. The ground was in the most favourable condition for scoring, and in the three days 953 runs were scored for thirty-three wickets. The game on the whole, though, did not provoke any great enthusiasm, and the Surrey eleven— despite the excellent cricket shown by M. Read, Mr. Roller and Abel in the first, and by the two Reads in the second innings— certainly did not show to the best advantage at any point. The Derbyshire eleven, for the ninth successive time this season in inter county matches, lost the toss, and this seriously interfered with their chance. They had to follow on in a minority of 199 run?, but despite this they played up with great pluck, and Messrs. Walker and Cochrane added 9 runs while they were together. The JSurrey bowling was very harmless on the excellent wicket, and the fielding all round was much below the usual standard of the eleven. S u rrey . First Innings. Mr. J. The Lancashire eleven followed up their success over Surrey at the Oval earlier in the week with another victory on Friday at Maidstone over Kent, and by the same majority of eight wickets. Kent won the toss, and mainly owing to the good play of Lord Harris, Mr. Mackinnon, and George Hearne at luncheon time had made 112 for the loss of only two wickets. On resuming, however, the Lancashire bowlers had things much their own way, and the innings closed for 200, to which Mr. W. Edwards, of the Granville Club, who made his debut for the county, contributed a promising score of twenty-five. When Lancashire went in, Mr. Christopherson’s fast bowling proved very effective, and four wickets (all to his credit) were down for 18. Messrs. A. G. and II. B. Steel, however, improved the as pect of the game during their partnership, and 66 runs were added before the former was caught at short slip. Mr. H. B. Steel, who had been so suocessful at the Oval, again hit with great vigour and the sixth wicket did not fall till Friday morning, when he was run out, having made 77, in which were sixteen fours, by fine free cricket. Mr. Royle, who had joined Mr. H. B. Steel at the fall of the fifth wicket, played very good cricket, and he carried out his bat for an admirable score of 79. When they went in a second time, in a minority of 30 runs, Kent began well, and 82 had been scored when tne third wicket fell. After this, though, no one made any stand, and the innings closed for 123, six of the eleven con tributing fourteen runs. With eighty-four to win, Lancashire made a bad start, and Barlow and Mr. Taylor were dismissed for only five runs. Messrs. Hornby andA.G. Steel, however, by fine hitting, quickly knocked off the 79 luns still wanted, and the match ended as above stated. K e n t . Fi st Innings. Second Inning*. Mr. M. C. Kemp, 1b w, b A. G.
