A COMBINED AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN, On Friday, Feb 15, the Australian team ommenced a match on the Association Ground at Sydney. Horan and A. Gregory were unable to play for the Combined Eleven, which included Spofforth, and their places were filled by Powell and Allen. Murdoch, as usual, won the to3s, and Massie, who captained the Combination, had to take the field. McDonnell and Bannerman were the first to bat, opposed by Marr and Evans. Bannerman soon had to retire, playing on, but Murdoch and McDonnell gave the bowlers some trouble. The latter made several fine cuts from Evans, but Marr was the first to give up bowling, and at 33 Spof forth took his place. Though he had not handled a ball for twelve months, Spofforth was as straight as ever, though he put on a little more pace than usual. Garrett re lieved Evans, but despite that Spofforth varied his pitch and pace with great judg ment, McDonnell continued to score fast until he was finely caught by Evans in at tempting to cutSpofforth. His score of 61 was in every way a brilliant performance. Giffen, who came next, was cleverly caught in the slips for a single, but another standwas made by Bonnor and Murdoch, and despite several changes the former rapidlyknocked up 67 before he was bowled. His score included two fives, terrific hits over the boundary fence. Four wickets were down for 180 when Midwinter joined Murdoch, and the latter increased his total to 83 before he was caught. His defence was very stubborn, and his play all-round good, though he was missed twice late in his innings. Mid winter showed good cricket for his 46, but with the exception of Palmer, no one else THE CROYDONJCLUB. April 14, at Croydon, Married v. Single April 19, at Croydon, Captain v. The thirty - second Inter-Colonial match was played on the Association Ground at Sydney, on 8, 9, 11, 12. McShane was unable to play, and Midwinter was called back from Sydney at the last moment by reason of his wife’s illness, so that Victoria had not quite its full strength. Murdoch again won the toss, but the bowling, par ticularly] of Palmer, was so good that no long scores were made, and the innings closed for 169. Palmer sent down 246 balls for 72 runs and 6 wickets. When Victoria went in the batsmen could not do much with the bowling of Evans, and Bonnor con tributed 29 to the total of 102. The collapse of the Victorian batsmen was a great surprise, as the wicket played well through out the innings. When New South Wales went in a second time Massie hit brilliantly, and in his score of 21 were five fours. Murdoch was bowled by Trumble the first ball he received, but Mbses, who played such a fine innings for the fifteen of New South Wales against the Fourth Australian team, and Bannerman made a determined stand on the fall of the third wicket, and 165 were added before the latter played on. His 91 was a fine display of sound and vigorous cricket. Moses, though he gave a chance or two, played splendid cricket for his 85, but the last five wickets only added 37, and the tenth fell for 289. Victoria had 357 to win, but the bowling of Evans and Garrett was so good that they were altogether Next Issue of CRICKET will be published Thursday) April 17.
