358 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. a u g . 21, ism . Sussex. He was, indeed, rarely unsuccess ful with the ball, and one of his perform ances for Eastbourne against M.C.C. and Ground at Eastbourne, where he took all ten wickets (nine bowled) of Marylebone, ranked among the curiosities of the year. His hitting, too, on several occasions, notably against Notts and Yorkshire at Brighton, was of great service to his side, and in the second inning3 against the former he made 32 out of the first 36 scored. During the present season he has proved himself to be one of the best all-round players in the South of England. He was not very suc cessful in his first fixture for Lord Sheffield’s eleven against the Australians, but for the county he has rarely failed to come off in batting or bowling. In the latter his best achievement was against Gloucestershire at Gloucester, and his figures on that occasion were very noteworthy, showing twelve wiekets for only 59 runs. He has rarely failed to make a creditable score for Sussex, but he was seen to the best advantage against Kent at Brighton, and in this match he was credited with 39 and 112, the latter a capital display of cricket. He was selected to re present the Players against the Australians at the Oval, but though unsuccessful with the bat came off in some measure with the ball, getting two wickets in the Australians’ first innings for seventeen runs. Hide is a very effective bat, though he would be better with a little mole defence. He plays very hard, especially on the off side, and on a fast wicket is a very dangerous player; He bowls medium round with a hi^h delivery. He is very straight, with an occasional break back, and on a sticky wicket is often very successful. His fielding is the only point in which he has not of late shown to advan- Next Thursday’s C kicket will contain a portrait and biography of W alter Hum- p h k b y s , of Sussex.
