AUSTRALIANS v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE. The re-appearance of the brothers Grace in the Gloucestershire eleven alter their recent bereavement, was attended with very fortunate results for the county. After the ill-success which has attended the Western team this season, the excellent show they made against the Australians at Clifton on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday last, will be eminently gratifying. The wicket on the Clifton College ground is so good that run- getting is very easy, and in this match the ground was so muchin favo ir o( thj batsmen that 845 runs were totalled iu the t tree days with only twenty-two wicluts down. Gloucestershire won the toss ond Messrs. Gilbert and E. M. Gra:i b.ittel so well, that 73 run? were made bstore the latter was caught at sl'p. Messrs. Gilbert and Townsend ylayed good cricket, but the feature of the m liugs was the re markable display of Mr. W. U. Grace. The great batsman went in when two wicket i were down for 84, and he scored 116 out of 217 runs while he was in. He never gave a chance during his long innings, and his play on this occasion was quite up to the best of his many extraordinary achievements with the bat. The public will everywhere be de lighted at this fresh proof, that despite bis lohg career of now twenty years in important cricket, he has still no superior as a batsman; This is Mr. Grace’s third hundred against the Australians during their present tour. When the Colonists went in, McDonnell hit in brilliant style, and Scott, towards the finish, played such fine cricket that the County was, after all, in a minority of 13 runs on the first innings. Woof was the .most succsssfal bowloron the Gloucestershire side, and considering the excellence of the wicket, his analysis of 83 overs for 82 runs and six wickets was a capital performance. The County did not enter on its second innings until just before one o’clock on Saturday and there was then nothing but a very remote chance of the game being played outi Spof forth, who had not been at all successful on thefir3tday, was not tried on Saturday by the Australian captain, nor was Palmer, so that the out cricket of the Australians must certainly not be taken as their best possible show. Of the regular bowlers only Mid winter, Giffen, and Boyle were triel, an I some brilliant hitting was shown by Messrs. Brain and Pullen. These two young amateurs while they were together a tded 159 runs, and the former scored so fast that his 100 were made iu five minutes under two hours. He was missed at the wicket by Bonnor, who was acting a3 substitute for Blackham ; but his innings was a brilliant one.andhis hitting was] articularly clean. Mr. Pullen ought to have been caught as well as stumpsd by Bonnor. Rain, which had fallen during the luncheon interval, finally stopped play at 4.40. Gloucestershire were then 217 on, with eight wickets to fall. Sc ire and analysis : — A tjstraliaxs . G. E. Palmer, st Bash, b Wool ................ 7 F. K. Spoflorth, b Woof 8 P. S.
