342 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. a tjg . u , is34. Moption." f It’ is "not only as a cricketer, though, that Mr. Newham has been iden tified with Sussex. He was present, if we remember rightly, at the meeting which resulted in the formation of the Sussex Football Association, and he has taken a great interest as well as an active part in its development. He has played back mere than once for the County, and it may fairly be said that he is considerably above the average of Association behinds. ¥flE>gC0I^E:B00K. HAMPSHIRE v. SOMERSETSHIRE. The Hampshire eleven did an extraordinary performance in this match at Southampton on Thursday last and two following days. Winning the toss, they were not dismissed until after luncheon on the second day, by which time they had amassed a huge total of 645, the largest in an important match in England, with the one exception of Surrey’s 650 against Hants at the Oval last year. Messrs, Powell and Lacey both scored over a hundred, and Mr. Duncan, who has not played much for his County of late, carried out his bat for 87. Mr. Powell had one life when he had made a hundred, but his play altogether was exceptionally good—his hit ting in particular being brilliant. In his 140 were twenty five fours. Mr. Lacey’s 100 contained fourteen fours. Somersetshire made a bad start, but Messrs. Terry and Robinson improved their position, and these two batsmen added 96 for the fourth wicket. The former’s figures were noteworthy, and his 51 consisted of twelve fours and three singles. Some good hitting by Mr. Read was witnessed later in the innings, but still they had to follow on in a minority of 391. Though Messrs. Trask and Challen added 96 while they were together when they went in again, the rest of the eleven did not lend any great help, and the second innings fell short of the first by 32 runs. Hampshire thus won by an innings and 169 runs. In all, 1,121 runs were scored in the match for 30 wickets, an average of just under 37i for each batsman. CRYSTAL PALACE v. BICKLEY PARK.
