Cricket 1884
AUG. 7,1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. • 337 DERBYSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Lancashire, though only poorly repre- spnled, had all the best of this match at Derby, on Monday and Tuesday, The Lancashire team going in first, made a very bad commencement, and five wickets were down for 28. A. useful stand by Barlow and Mr. Hornby who, by capital cricket, added 96 runs while they were together, however, entirely altered the aspect of the game, and the innings reached 162. Mr. Cochrane, of the Repton School eleven, made his first ap pearance for the Derbyshire team, and was successful, a s will be seen, with both bat and ball. The Derbyshire batsmen only made a poor show against the bowling of Watson and Barlow, and in their two innings only totalled 126. Watson took nine wickets for 61, Barlow seven for 42. The Plavers of Yorkshire had a very easy victory in this match played at Sheffield on Monday and Tuesday. The Gentlemen, though well represented, were only able to score 81 and 53, and were beaten by an inaings and 70 runs. The easy victory of the Players was mainly due to the fine bowl ing of Peate. His figures were remarkable. In all he took thirteen wickets at a cost of only 53 runs. P layers .
