Cricket 1884
326 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. a u g . 7, u m . Daft’s team of English cricketers. His con tribution against the Irishmen—who were defeated in one innings—was thirty-one. Against the bowling of Shaw and Morley in the second great match of the American season he made double figures eaoh time, while two years later his score of 40 against Shaw and Shrewsbury’s eleven then on its way to Australia, was highly praised by the professionals. On the inception of the tourwhich the Philadelphian amateurs have just completed in England, Mr. Newhall ■was one of the first chosen to join the taam. Subsequently too, when it was finally settled that his elder brother Daniel would be unable to act as oaptain during the trip he was unanimously Chosen to fill this important and arduous post. Throughout he has scored consistently, and his batting average for the eighteen matches is, with one exception— that of Mr. Scott — the highest on the side. His principal con tributions have been 126, against the Gentlemen of Cheshire, 86 against the Scarborough Club, 71 against the Gentlemen of Derbyshire, 64 against the Castleton Club, 55 against the Gentlemen of Leices tershire, and 52 against the Liverpool Club. Nr. Newhall is a right-handed bat with a free style. He drives very hard, keeping the ball well on the ground and placing it with judgment. His defence is nearly all back, and although his style is not a finished one, he seldom fails either to get runs or to infuse life into the game. He does not bowl, but is a sure field, although his return is necessarily slow, owing to an injury to the shoulder, which he received a few years back. His performances in England have been of such a kind as to give the highest satisfaction to the friends of American cricket; and it hag been especially a matter of congratulation that the family which has done everything for cricket on the other side of the Atlantic should have been so worthily represented in the home of the game. ¥ p : $ C 0 ^ E : B 0 0 K .
