The first match of the season between these counties begun at Manchester, on Thursday, was brought to a conclusion soon after luncheon on the second day. After being headed by 23 runs on the first innings Gloucestershire had made 25 in the second for the loss of one wicket, when a telegram was received by Mr. W.G. Grace, containing the sad news of his mother’s death. A brief consultation ensued and it was mutually agreed to give up the match as drawn. The chief features of the game—which was left in a very interesting condition—were the ex cellent cricket of Mr. W. G. Grace, who scored just one half of the runs made by Gloucestershire from the bat in the first innings, the vigorous hitting of Mr. Hornby, and the effective bowling of Barlow for Lan cashire.
