The Surrey eleven showed some very creditable cricket in their first match of the season with Yorkshire, played at Dewsbury on Thursday last and two following days. The boundaries on the Dewsbury ground are very easy, and runs come fast. Surrey winning the toss, made the best use of their advantage, and were not dismissed until past five o ’clock for a total of 266, Mr. Shuter and Barratt were the only members of the team who failed to /jet double figures, and Wood and Mr. Horner added 52 for the last wicket. Despite the good play of Ulyett and the colt Lee, Yorkshire had to follow on in a minority of 106 runs. Again Ulyett and Lee played fine cricket, and Mr. Hirst also lent useful assistance. When the seventh wicket fell Yorkshire were only 63 runs on but Peate soon after his arrival was missed by M. Read at short leg, and this mistake altered the whole aspect of the game. After this the Yorkshire slow bowler hit with great rigour, and with the benefit of two more lives when he had got 31 and 78, he continued to score rapidly until he was at last caught at mid-on for a very hard hit, though lucky, score of 95. With 179 to win, Surrey had lost one good wicket on Friday night for 12, so that they were left with a difficult task, when play begun on Saturday morning. Rain prevented resumption until one o’clock, and after Mr. Bowden had increased his score by eight runs, another heavy downpour stopped play. As there seemed little chance of a cessation, the two captains agreed to abandon the match as a draw, Surrey still wanting 159 to win, with nine wickets to fall. SURREY. First Innings. M.
