Cricket 1884
294 CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. jdl Y24, i 8 m . with a very useful second score of 42 for the Gentlemen against the Players, at the Oval, He was selected by the Lancashire executive to represent England against Australia, in the first of the three matches arranged, but, despite that his second score of 20 was a very useful one, his play did not fulfil the expectations created in the minds of those who witnessed his brilliant hitting on the same ground for Oxford against Lancashire. When set there ara indeed few batsmen so dangerous. He has very good wrist play, but his hitting all round is very powerful, and, as he has plenty of pluck, hescores freely off any kind of bowling. At one time he was a little uncertain in the field, but he has of late shown a great improvement in this department, and has this season acquitted himself with great credit, particularly “ in the country.” It will, too, perhaps, not be generally known that he was tried once for Middlesex at the wicket. This was against Oxford University at Lord’s in 1881, in which match he soored 3 and 8 not out. Our portrait is from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Co. BATTLE v. CATSFIELD.
