Cricket 1884

286 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. JULY 17, 1884* YORKSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. The Lancashire eleven deserve to he heartily congratulated on their success at Sheffield on Tuesday, over Yorkshire in this match, for Allan Hill’s benefit. The ground after the recent rains was of course against the batsmen, and Barlow and Peate proved very effective with the ball for their respective sides. The bowling of the former was indeed the feature of the match, and the Lancashire victory was in a great measure due to him. Altogether he delivered G2 overs and lball for 66 runs andlo wickets, a very fine performance. Briggs and Mr. A. G. Steel were responsible for 112 out of a total of 165 from the bat in Lancashire’s first innings. The latter’s score of 75 not out was a capital display of batting, with only one chance when he had made 59. Bates Lit very freely for 66 for Yorkshire, but other wise there was little noteworthy in their bat ting, and in the first innings the last eight batsmen together only made 14 runs. Lan cashire won by six wickets. First Innings. Middle sex was at the last moment deprived of the valuable services of Messrs. C. T. Studd and A . J. Webbe, and, though the eleven was a strong one, these two amateurs have always proved so successful against Surrey that they were much missed. The ground was of course slow after the recent rains, and in consequence the scoring was much below the average of these matches. The chief feature of the batting was Mr. I. D. Walker’s per formance in the first innings of Middlesex. He went in first and carried out his bat for 47 out of a total of 126, playing unusually steadily throughout. Barratt and Mr. Horner bowled very effectively for Surrey, who won by seven wickets. Score and analysis:.— M iddlesex . First Innings. Mr. I. D. Walker, not out .. Mr. T. S. Pearson, b Morton Mr. A.
