Cricket 1884

JULY 17,1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME; 283 SUBKEY v. SUSSEX. Surrey succeeded in winning its first match of the season against Sussex at Brighton, on Friday, with ten wickets to spare. The wicket, owing to the rain, was not in the same condition for run-getting as in the matches in which the Sussex eleven figured recently against Notts and Kent, though it never played really bad. The home team have been scoring well this season but still none of them made a long stand in either innings. Despite a well played 31 not out by Mr, Wyatt, they failed to save the follow-on, and, though they made a slightly better show in the second attempt, Surrey at the finish had all their wickets in hand. Abel re-appeared in the Surrey eleven after some weeks’ absence from illness. He was the highest scorer on the side, though he had plenty of luck, being missed three times in all. The Sussex eleven felt greatly the want of H. Phillips at the wicket. Messrs. Shuter and Bowden got the 29 runs wanted by Surrey to win from 27 balls in ten minutes. S u r r e y . Of late years rain has sadly interfered with tha progress of the annual fixtures between these two great Public Schools. In 1882, as well as 1883, the game was left unfinished from this cause, and the same unfortunate ending had to be recorded in the sixtieth match begun at Lord's, on Friday last. It was generally thought that the Harrovians, though fairly strong in bowling, were a weak batting team, and, in consequence, Eton were slight favourites. As each School had won twenty-five matches unusual interest attached to last week’s contest, and under favourable conditions there would have been no lack of excitement. The .rain had, how ever, made the wicket much slower than it had been recently, and in consequence the play presented few features calculated to evoke any great enthusiasm. Harrow were lucky in winning the toss, but the earlier batsmen did little against the bowling of Martin and Mordaunt, and five wickets were down for 52, of which Oates had contributed 31. When Dauglish was caught seven of the Harrow team were out for 70, and it did not look as if they.would attain three figures. Young, Dent, and Cox, though, helped to improve matters considerably, and the total ultimately reached 126 ; Young carrying out his bat for a very useful 23. When Eton went in they made even a worse commencement than their opponents; and Ramsay and Dent bowled with such effect that half the wickets were down for only 31 runs. Some good hitting by Scott and Forster brought on Buxton for Ramsay at 59, and with six runs add'id he bowled Scott for a well hit 32. Forster, whose 23 was composed of four fours, a three, and two twos, was caught at slip at 75, and as the three last wickets only added seven, the Eton innings closed for 82, or 44 behind. When Harrow went a second time some capital cricket was shown by W. Dent, Young, and Butler, and when play ceased at the end of the first day they were 196 on with four wickets still to go down. Rain was falling fast at eleven o’clock on Saturday morning when play ought to have been resumed. Though the weather cleared up about one o’clock a steady down-pour re-commenced after half- an-liour, and soon after three o’clock the two captains agreed to give up the match as drawn. H a r r o w .
