Cricket 1884
278 CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, j u l y 17, ism . county with slight success. So far, though, this summer his batting has been certainly quite as good, if not better, than that of any professional player of the day, and up to Saturday last in county and other important matches he had the splendid average of 41£ for thirteen completed innings, a record only inferior to that of Lord Harris. For Notts against Middlesex, at Lord’s, he played a very fine innings of 104 not out, but his best performance is his 134 against the Australians at Huddersfield. His play in this match was a very marvel of defensive cricket, and no higher eulogium can be passed on his innings than in the simple statement that he was six hours at the wickets without giving anything like a chance—a great feat against the Australian bowlers. Scotton is a left-handed batsman, as well as bowler. Of late years he has given up hitting, which used to be his forte, and taken to an almost strictly defensive style of play. Unlike the majority of left-handed batsmen he comes down very straight on the ball, and his batting is far more correct than is usually the case with them. Though he can hit freely he bats now with great care and steadi ness, and he is a very useful man to go in first, as the Nottingham Captain knows full well. He is a capital field anywhere, but rarely bowls now, and, indeed, his bowling is very plain. Scotton is, in addition, a good pigeon shot, and as a football player is not without merit. Although not in the Cup team of the Notts Club, he played in several first-class matches last season. ¥ p E : ^ C 0 ^ E v B 0 0 K . UPTON PARK v. ENFIELD. Played at Enfield on June 28. R.
