272 CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, J u ly io, i884. GENTLEMEN OF PHILADELPHIA v. CASTLETON CLUB. The Philadelphian team added another to their recent successes, at Rochdale, on Saturday, when they defeated the Castle- ton Club by an innings and 16 runs. Scott, Macnutt, and C. A. Newhall were unable to play for the Americans. Some good batting, though, was shown by R. S. Newhall, Thayer, Brewster, and Law, and their total of 298 was altogether beyond the capacities of their opponents. The home team indeed, with the exception of Messrs. Taylor and Chadwick, could do nothing with Lowry’s bowling, and he was credited with 15 wickets at a cost cf 132 runs. P h il a d e l p h ia n s . E. W. After a highly exciting finish the Phila delphian team beat the Gentlemen »of Liverpool on Tuesday last with only four runs to spare. The Americans had an ad vantage of sixteen runs on the first innings, but they did not fare so well when they went in again, and the only noteworthy feature of their batting was the excellent play of their captain, R. S. Newhall, who contributed 52 to their total of 102. Liverpool wanted 119 to win, and so well did Parr and Potter play, that 101 had been got when the fifth wicket fell. Eighteen then were only required to win, but after this Lowry’s bowling proved so effective that the innings was completed for an addition of only thirteen, and the Philadelphians were able to claim a very creditable victory just before time. Their success was in a great measure due to Lowry, who took six wickets in Liverpool's second innings for 16 runs. P h il a d e l ph ia n s . First Innings. Second Innings. A. J.
