After three days of very even and singu larly interesting cricket, the Australians suc ceeded in defeating the Gentlemen of Eng’ land at the Oval on Saturday with 46 runs to spare. The Gentlemen were not in quite their full strength, and had they been able to play, room would certainly have been made in the team for the Hon. Alfred Lyttel ton and Messrs. O’Brien and Kemp. Still the eleven was a fairly strong one, and the Australians deserve the highest credit for the way in which they played up at the finish, their out cricket being admirable at every point. Though they had the good luck (o win the toss, they began badly, and chiefly through the success of Mr. Christopherson’s fast bowling lost six wickets for fifty-six runs. A determined stand by Blackham and Midwinter, however, altered the aspect of the game entirely, and the latter carried out his bat for an exceedingly well-got sixty. The chief feature of the first innings of the Gentlemen was the brilliant batting of Mr. W . G. Graco. He was still rather lame from his recent accident, and this only makes his peiformance all the more remarkable. He was at the wickets al together for three hours and a half, and he scored 107 out of 222 while he was in. His display was iu every way up to his best repu tation. His figures were twelve fours, three threes, eleven twos, and twenty-eight singles. Lord Hariis played well for his thirty-five,but otherwise the batting of the gentlemen was not of a very high quality, and the last five wickets only added thirty-nine runs. When the Australians went in a second time, Bannerman played steady cricket, and Mur doch, Bonnor and Blackham lent such use ful help, that the score showed 150 for six wickets, or 118 on with four wickets to fall. Saturday’s play was, therefore, invested with the greatest interest, and the finish proved to be very exciting. Midwinter hit very freely on the third morning, and chiefly by his aid, the last four wickets added sixty-nine runs. The Gentlemen were left with 188 to win, and at luncheon time seventeen had been made by Messrs. Grace and Studd, who had, as in the first innings, opened the batting. On resuming, the runs came fast, until at sixty, Mr. Studd was caught at third man. One run later, Mr, Grace,, failing to get hold of one of Spofforth’s, was caught in much the same position, aud two wickets were down for 61. Messrs. Read and Lucas were now partners, and the former, who had not been apparently at all at home, was bowled with the score at 79 Mr. Steel fol lowed, and despite the good bowling and close fielding of the Australians runs came faster. There was great cheering as 100 went up at four o’clock, and then Boyle went on at the pavilion end instead of Spof forth, a change which had an important effect on the result. Only four runs had been added when one of Boyle’s beat Mr. Lucas,
