Cricket 1884
JUNE 26, 1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 241 DERBYSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Derbyshire suffered another reverse at Derby on Tuesday, when the Yorkshire eleven beat them with ten wickets to spare. The wicket again played badly, and as a consequence, the scoring on both sides was only small. The most noteworthy feature of the match was the bowling of Emmett, in the second innings of Derbyshire. He took seven wickets at a cost of only twenty runs, a fine performance, despite that the ground was all in favour of the bowlers. D e r b y sh ir e . First Innings. The Cambridge team completed their last trial match at Lord's on Tuesday when they suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of a fairly strong team of M.C.C, and Ground by an innings and 29 runs. Twelve batted on each side, but only eleven fielded. Mr. J. A. Turner, who did notplay against Surrey, was again tried for the University, and Mr. E. O. Powell, who has been scoring well for Hants, was for the first time this season included in the eleven. The wicket helped the bowlers, and Flowers got a great deal of work on the ball. Still the batting of the University was on the whole very disappointing, although in the second innings Turner, Powell, and Greatorex all played fair cricket. The easy win of M C.C. was mainly due to the brilliant all-round cricket of Flowers. Ilis score of 122 wa3a very fine c^iiplay of vigorous bat ting, but his bowling was even more suc cessful.
