Cricket 1884

JUNE 26, 1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 237 for Oxford, a question was asked on the subject by the Cambridge authori ties of M. C. Kemp, the Captain of the Oxford eleven. Mr.O’Brien is attached to New Inn Hall, and only came up during the term just over. The doubt was as to whether he was really a bona, fidi member of the Uni versity, but I understand that no regular protest was lodged, and I take it, therefore, that Mr. O’Brien’s quali fication is established. T h e eleven to represent the Gen tlemen of England against the Austra lians at the Oval to-day, will consist of Lord Harris, Messrs. W. G. Grace, C. T . Studd, A. P. Lucas, W. W. Read, A. W. Ridley, E. J. Diver, A. G. Steel, W. E. Roller, S. Christopherson, and F . T . Welman. It is a strongish bat ting side, but there is a lack of bowling. O n June 16, 17, and 18, Mr. F. E. Lacey scored 211 and 92 not out, for Hants against Kent, and on the 20tli and 21st, 159 for the Gentlemen of Hants against I Zingari. Not a bad week’s work: 462 for two com pleted innings. M r . F. L ip s c o m b e ’ s bowling at Ton bridge on Tuesday for Tonbridge and District in the second innings of the Second Eleven of Kent is quite a curiosity. He took all the nine wickets which fe'l to the bowlers, the tenth being run out. His analysis was twelve overs, four maidens, nine runs, and nine wickets. A C o r r e s p o n d e n t sends me a rather peculiar incident in a match between Wimborne and Poole on June 11. In the second innings of the former Newman, a professional, played the first ball of the innings and the last, from which he was caught. He had meanwhile made 23 runs, having seen his ten fellow batsmen all retire without scoring. The total of the innings was 27, of which two were byes, and there was also a wide and a leg-bye. In the first innings Wim borne only scored 14, Knight, a young professional engaged by the Poole Club, bowling ten overs for one run and seven wickets. T h e annual m a t c h between Eton and Winchester is to b e c o m m e n c e d at Winchester to-morrow- T h e fol lowing, it is said, will bo the Eton eleven :—R. J. Lucas (captain), F. Thomas, H. W.Forster, H. Philipson, T. H. Barnard, W. C. Bridgeman, E. G. Bromley-Martin, Lord G. Scott, F. A. Soames, H. J. Mordaunt, and T. W. Brand. A well-known amateur, who has played against the two Schools, is of opinion that both elevens are below the average, although the Etonians have improved consider ably just lately. Swayne seems to be bowling well for Winchester, but all round the Wykehamists are not apparently a good team. Their ground, which has recently been taken up, is not playing at all well this year, and Eton will be at a dis advantage in having to play on their opponent’s ground. LAW CLUB v. M.C.C. & G.
