Cricket 1884

230 CEICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e sc, i884 ' % in first for Cambridge he defied all the Oxford bowling, and remained at the wickets for three hours and a half, scoring out of a total of 215, 102 b y the best cricket without a chance. In the second innings, Cambridge requiring 56 to win, he went in again first , and knocked off 29 not out, making the winning hit for Cambridge with seven wickets to fall. This was a bril liant performance in every way, and his aggregate of 131 in the match entitles him to the distinction of the highest total scorer in the forty-nine inter- University contests as yet played. His fine play on this occasion secured him the honour of an invitation to represent the Gentlemen against the Players both at the Oval and Lord’s, and though he failed to come off at St. John’s Wood, his first score of 21 at the Oval in the memorable tie match was a very creditable display. A run of bad luck now followed the young Cantab, and in the match for Nott3 v. Yorkshire on the Trent Bridge Ground, he was run out for 0 in both innings. Indeed, a strange fatality seems to attend him whenever playing at home, for he invariably fails to score in the very place where his county friends would be most pleased to greet his success. Playing for M.C.C. v. Yorkshire at Scarborough at the end of 1883 Mr. Wright kept wickets for the club and captured no less than five of the Yorkshiremen in the first innings, in addition to scoring 7 (not ont) and 27 (not out). In the remainder of the Scarborough week he captained the combined counties of Notts and Lancashire against England, and his side won in one innings, his personal contribution being 37, run out. The season of 1883 was altogether a most successful one for him, and in 38 innings (4 times not out), he totalled 644, or an average of nearly 19 per innings. This season, though he has scored fairly well at Cambridge, Mr. Wright has not been batting up to his form of 1883. Despite this Oxford will be fortunate if they can get rid of him at all cheaply in the Inter- University match, as he has plenty of confi dence, and is sure to play sound and steady cricket. He has hardly maintained his school reputation as a wicket-keeper, though he has been fairly successful in more than one match this season. Mr. Wright is a keen cricketer, and no one is more popular at Cambridge than our friend “ Chawles,” as he is familiarly called by his comrades. In the winter over some of the fine shooting grounds in the neighbourhood of Nottingham the Cambridge wicket - keeper is known as an excellent game shot. No long day’s walking after partridges in the open or pull ing through briars in covert is too much for him. When out. too, with the South Notts hounds, or the Quorn, he invariably rides straight, and is always there or thereabouts at the finish. Our portrait is from a pho tograph by W. A. and H. Fry, of Brighton. T J I E v $ C @ ^ E v B 0 0 K . LINDEN v. OAKLEY. Played at Honor Oak on June 14. L in d e n . W. F. Williams, b Calif A . Chatterton, b Beala .1.A.Williams, b Calif.. G. H.
