Cricket 1884
JUNE 12, 1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 203 AUSTRALIANS v. YORKSHIRE. The Australians gained a very creditable victory in the ninth match of their tour at Bradford on Tuesday when they defeated Yorkshire after a most exciting finish with only three wickets to spare. Owing to the heavy rains the wicket was in a very spongy condition, and as a consequence with plenty of bowling on each side the batsmen had all the worst of the game. The highest score of the match was Bates’ first innings of 24, and in all thirty-seven wickets only realised an aggregate of 238 from the bat, an average of just under runs. Though the Austra lians only wanted 68 to win when they went in a second time the state of the ground rendered this no easy task, and considerable interest was evinced in the result. Five wickets were down for 45, but Palmer and Blackham played so pluckily at the crisis that 18 runs were added during their stay, and it was mainly to their stand that the Australians owed their victory. Spofforth, Palmer, Peate, and Emmett all bowled with remarkable success, and it is noteworthy that there was no change during the first three innings of the match. Palmer took eleven Yorkshire wickets for 54 runs, and Peate again proved that he has no superior in England on sticky wickets. The York shire eleven fielded up in fine style at the finish, and indeed the cricket on both sides was worthy of the highest praise, Murdoch, it will be seen, did not play in this match, and his place was taken l)y Alexander.
