18 2 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, tomes ,met SUSSEX y. HANTS. Sussex won its first match of the season against Hants easily,at Brighton on Tuesday, with cight wickets to spare, Mr. Powell, who was so successful against Surrey, again showed good cricket, and his play in the second innings enabled Hants to make a fair show. Sussex mainly owed its first score of 231 to Mr. Whitfeld and Jesse Hide, who together scored more than one- half of the aggregate. Hampshire had by no means its full strength. S u ssex . The Nottingham eleven gained another victory at Nottingham yesterday, when they beat Surrey with seven wickets to spare. Mr. W. \V. Read played two fine innings for Surrey, but despite some good hatting by M. Read and Messrs. Shuter and Bowden, the Southerners were ovor-matohed. Barnes, who is in rare form this season, was again chief scorer for Notts, and Scotton followed up his brilliant performance against Middle sex with another excellent display of cricket.
