j a n . 3 i, 1884. CRICKET; A "WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 13 for many years rendered such signal ser vice to his native country. The balance at the end of the year showed £1,170 10s. lid . as against £910 14s. 6d. twelve months before. The subscriptions amounted to £663 7s., and the receipts for the different matches were as under :— Match receipts :■ £ s. d. Capt. Holden was elected President for the ensuing year, Aid. Manning, Mayor of Nottingham, Vice-President, and Messrs. R. H. Steegmann, W . F. Bromley, and Major Egerton chosen to fill the places of the three retiring members of the Committee. Lord BELrEii, in proposing a vote of thanks to Lord Newark, the retiring President, for his services during the year, as well as to the Vice-President, Aid. Lindley (the ex-Mayor), said it must be a matter of satisfaction to the retiring President and Vice-President that during their year of office Notts had held the proud position of being the premier county as re garded cricket. (Cheers). There was one remark he should like to make on the cricket of last year, and it was that although Notts gained the enviable and justly to be desired position of head county, there was one little complaint he had to make, and that was that the team got too many runs. (Laughter). They would have won one or two more matches, he thought, if they had not got so many runs as they did. That was a fault on the right side, however, and one which he hoped might be continued, and if the batsmen were backed up by bowlers of equal merit, there was no reason to fear that Notts would not keep up the position she had already gained. (Applause). The motion was seconded and carried amidst applause. The C h airm an , in reply, said that it had been a great pleasure to him that during his year of office the county had occupied the highest position. He was very glad they were going to play matches with the Australians, because he thought such en counters tended to promote friendly rivalry between the two countries, and do good to cricket. (Applause). A vote of thanks to the committee having been proposed and adopted unanimously, the proceedings terminated. NEW COLLEGE (OXFORD) CLUB. Matches played, 19 ; won, 6 ; lojt, 4—viz., v. It contains a well- written account of the last English team in Australia by the Hon. Ivo Bligh, an exhaus tive article on Cricket in 1883 by ‘Incog.,’ and an interesting account of the different cricket clubs of Scotland, in addition to the usual elaborate statistics of the last season. The frontispiece this year is a capital photoj'raph of the successful Surrey eleven of 1883. We understand that the demand for this edition is greater than ever, and we are not surprised, as it is worth far more than the published price—one shilling. Messrs. Wright and Co. (the Cricket Press), of 17, Paternoster Square, forward it post-free for. Is. 2d. Next Issue of CRICKET will be published Thursday February 28.
