1G0 CRICKET ; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. m a t 29, i o u KENT v. HAMPSHIRE. A weak eleven of Kent secured a. very creditable victory in this match at Graves end yesterday. Hampshire, who were also not fully represented, began well with a score of 351, to which nine batsmen contributed double figures, Kent, though, mainly through the good play of George Hearne, were able to save tbe follow on, and they won in fine style with seven •wickets to 6pare. In the second innings of Hants, five wickets were down;for 15, and it was only the stand of Messrs. Longman and Armstrong who, while they were together put on 133 runs, that en abled them to make a respectable second total. Kent got the 243 wanted to win for the loss of only three batsmen, Lord Harris nnd George Hearne both'playing fine cricket. Scoie and analysis :— ................. H a m psh ir e . Five of the team, it will be seen, contributed 461 out of 471 from the bat, and extras fur nished as many as 68 to the Yorkshire aggregate, a percentage of over 12 "per cent, certainly reflecting discreditably on the University. Bates’s 133 is the’second score of a hundred he has made against the Uni versity in successive ,matches. The bowling of Cambridge, •who sorely missed Mr. C. A. Smith, was very weak, and their fielding not up to the best standard. Still the performance of Bates, Hall, and Grimshaw was very extraordinary, and they deserve the highest credit for an exceptional feat. Nine bowlers were tried for the University. The Cambridge Eleven had to suffer another decisive defeat on their own ground yesterday, when Yorkshire beat them by no less than an innings and 203 runs. Though Lockwood, owing to an injured finger, was unable to bat, the Yorkshire men were able to reach a huge total of 539. Tbe innings was quite a curiosity, as three of the eleven were able to make over a hundred runs, a Total . ..114 Y o rk sh ire . The Nottinghamshire eleven won their first match of the season with Middlesex at Lord’s yesterday with six wickets to fall. The victory was mainly due to the good batting of Shrewsbury, Scotton, and Barnes, and the very effectivebowling of Attewell in the second innings of Middlesex. Attewell’s analysis was indeed extraordinary. He bowled 102 balls for 21 runs and 7 wickets. Altogether in the matclibe bowled 54maidens out of 8& overs. Mr. A. P. Xucaa, who was advertised to play, was unable to. help Mid dlesex after all, but the eleven was a fairly good one, and their dismissal in the secon l innings for 113 vas very creditable to the Nottingham bowlers.
