Winning the toss the home team O nly made a moderate start, but the brilliant play of Mr. Read and Barratt’s excellent batting enabled them to reach a total,of< 317, Mr. Read ought to have been caught at long-off when he had made about sixty, .but the fieldsman altogether misjudged the hall. He gave, too, an impossible chance low down to Mr. Marriott at mid-off, but these were his only mistakes and his play all round, especially at the finish, was up to his very best form. Barratt and he added 103 runs, the second time ttyis season that the former has helped to put on a hundred for the last wicket. Bottimore showed good cricket each time. The feature of the Leicestershire batting, though, Was the second innmgs of'Mr. Hay. He went in first and carried out his bat for 69 out of 186, a capital display of defensive cricket. S urrey .
