150 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OP THE GAME. m a y 20,1884. C R IC K E T -fTHW /IM B ^ ID G E . CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY v. MR. C. I. THORNTON’S ELEVEN, The Cambridge Eleven were easily beaten at Cambridge, on Sa'urday last, in their first match of the season, by an eleven of England, captained by Mr. C. I. Thornton. They had a lead of seventy-nine runs on the first hands, but after the first day they were not seen to advantage, and their bowling and batting alike proved disappointing. Bates and Mr. Webbe punished their bowling severely, and these tv\o batsmen put on 168 runs in the second innings Emmett’s biwling had very much to do with the defeat of the University. In the two innings he was credited with thirteen wickets at a cost of only 93 runs. Mr. Thornton’s eleven won by 113 runs. E n gland E leven . First Innings. Seeond Innings. Mr. C. I. Surrey were able to claim an easy victory over their old opponents of Hampshire at the Oval on Friday last. Messrs. Wood and Lacey were unable to assist Hants, but the eleven included a new amateur likely to be of great use in Mr. E. 0. Powell, of King’s College, Cambridge, who played for Surrey in 1882. He showed very steady and good cricket in each innings, and he was very un lucky in being caught at the wicket in the second when only one short of three figures. Mr. Bonham-Carter hit very freely f rhis 67. The chief feature of the Surrey batting was the play of Mr. M. P. Bowden. His two scores of 42 and 89 not out, were free from a chance. In the first innings of Hants every wicket was bowled, a very rare occurrence. Surrey won by seven wickets. Henderson was out when the score was a tie. H an ts . First Innings. Mr. C. R. DERBYSHIRE, The Derbyshire eleven made a very plucky fight against Lancashire in their first match of the season, begun on the old Trafford Ground at Manchester on Thursday last. At the end of the first day the advantage was all on the side of Lancashire, but the home team made such a poor show against the bowling of Mr. Walker and Shacklock when they went in a second time, that they were all dismissed for 99. This left Derbyshire with 153 to win, but Barlow bowled so well that no one but Cropper made a very long stay, and Lancashire won on Saturday morn ing with 42 runs to spare.
