Cricket 1884

138 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, m a t 22 , 1904 . M.C.C. & GROUND y. LANCASHIRE. Special interest was centred in this match at Lord’s on Monday and Tuesday from the fact of the strong expression of opinion against the fairness of more than one of the bowlers who assisted the County. No action was, however, taken by either of the umpires, Clayton and Wheeler, to show that in their judgment any of the deliveries was open to suspicion, so that the bowlers whose fairness has been impugned at least passed muster on this occasion. The Club was re presented by only a moderate batting side, but the Lancashire bowling did not prove very formidable, and the Marylebone total reached 286. Hearne, who was in while 162 runs were scored, carried out his bat for 43. The surprise of the innings was the unexpectedly good batting of the last man, Sherwin, and he made as many as 37 of the 49 scored for the last wicket. Briggs hit with great freedom in the first innings of the County, and though he had two lives his 74 was a fine display of cricket. He hit three fours in one over of Rylott. Follow ing on in a minority of 99, Mr. Hornby and Barlow put on 47 for the first wicket, of which number the amateur cortributed 33, including a fine leg hit from Mr. Grace over the tennis court. After this, though, no stand was made, and Barnes and Flowers, helped by the wicket which had worn badly, carried everything before them, Mr. Steel scored three fours in one over of Barnes, but no one else of the later batsmen made any stay, and M.C.C. won with unexpected ease by an innings and four runs. Flowers’ figures in the second innings of the County were extraordinary. He bowled 20 overs (12 maidens) for 18 runs and 6 wickets. M.C.C. Mr. W. G. Grace, c Watson, b Barlow.. 14 Mr. E. OXFORD UNIVERSITY. T h o u g h they were anything but a repres entative eleven, the Gentlemen of England won the first of their two annual matches against the Universities at Oxford yesterday, after an interesting finish. The Oxonians were able to claim an advantage of seventy- two runs at the end of an innings, but their bowling was severely punished when the Gentlemen went in a second time. Messrs, J. G. Walker and Studd made eighty for the first wicket, and the two Walkers added 103 before the second fell. Going in with 266 to win, Oxford on Tuesday night had lost five of their wickets for 73. Yesterday, how ever, the tail played up so pluckily that the finish was exciting, and the Gentlemen only won with thirty-one runs to spare. G en tlem en of E n g lan d .
