The American Cricketer has the following details respecting the forthcoming yisit of the Philadelphians ;— Mr. Robert S. Newhall has been unani mously elected captain of the team for England; he will make a lirst-rate captain, and we believe it to be the best choice that could have been made. The team has been finally completed by the consent of Mr. Brockie to make the trip, and the addition of Mr. W . C. Morgan, jun., in place of Mr. D. S. Newhall, who, most unfortunately, will be unable to go. A Philadelphia cricketer has offered a silver cup to be awarded to the player making the best batting average on the trip. The Young America Cricket Club have tendered the use of Stenton for the team’s practice until the time of sailing; tht,y began practising there this week. In the match between the Gentlomen of Phila delphia and Dublin University, June 2 and 3, the team will have the honour of playing on the grounds of the Lord Lieutenant, which have been courteously tendered for the match. A match bas been arranged with the Gentlemen of Scotland at Edinburgh, June 7 and 9, a local fixture for those dates between the University of Edinburgh and the Grange Cricket Club having been kindly changed. The use of the Liverpool Cricket Club grounds, and of the Lancashire Cricket Club grounds, Old Trafford, Manchester, has been offered to the team for practice. The committee have written to Mr. Per kins, secretary Marylebone 0. C., asking him to recommend a suitable man to ac company the team in the capacity of umpire ; Mr. Saunders, of the Devonshire Cricket Club, who was lately in Philadelphia, re commended Robert Thome as one of the very best umpires in England, but he was found to be engaged for the season to umpire for the “ Incogniti,” who intend making an extended tour of England. Ox ford University has been asked for a match, June 11th and 12th; as yet no reply has been received, but it is to be hoped the match will be gotten on. Towards the end of the tour, if the men shape up well and are in good condition, fixtures will be made, if dates can be obtained, with the Gentle men of England and with the Australians ; this, however, will not be definitely arranged until after the arrival of the team in England. In order to give their friends and the lovers of the game an opportunity to see the Philadelphia Team play together before their departure, a match has been arranged between them and the New York Eleven, which played so brilliant a game here last fall, under the captaincy of Mr. Cyril Wilson, of the Staten Island Club. With the view of showing the special interest "taken in the project of the com mittee, a number of the ladies of Philadel phia, to whose support and encouragement the game owes so much of its success in this locality, have kindly consented to act as patronesses on this occasion as the repre sentatives of the different clubs. The funds to meet the expenses of the trip abroad have been guaranteed by a number of gentlemen of Philadelphia ; but this match will afford an opportunity to all who desire to contribute to these expenses, as the net proceeds thereof will be applied to that purpose. The game will be played on the grounds of the Germantown Cricket Club, at Nicetown, May 9th and 10th, be ginning each day at 10 a.m. A L e t t e r signed “ A Reader ” comment ing on Middlesex Colts match at Fulham, on Saturday, has not been inserted because it was not authenticated by name of writer. T h o k n b c r y v. C h e p s to w . —Some heavy scoring was done by the Thornbury team in a match against Chepstow, at Thornbury, on the 7tli inst. Mr. W. G.
