Cricket 1884

MAY 15, 1884. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 125 MARYLEBONE CLUB AND GROUND v. KENT. Som e capital cricket was the result of this match begun at Lord’s on Monday, and finished yesterday. Despite the thunder storm on the first day the game was in favour of the batsmen, and in all 814 runs were scored for 34 wickets. The feature of tlie match was the stand made by Messrs. C. T. Studd and J. Shuter when M.C.C. went in a second time, and to them the brilliant victory of the Club waBentirely due. They became partners on the fall of the second wicket, with the total at 14, and when Mr. Shuter was bowled the score was 213. The two batsmen thus while they were together put on 199 runs. Mr. Shuter played well and hit freely, and too much praise can not be given to Mr. C. T. Studd, whose 141 not out, was one of the very best innings he has ever played. M.CtC. won by six wiokets. T o the E ditor of “ C ricket . ” S ir , —I should be glad to know in your next issue whether anything has been done towards selecting a team representing Eng land to play together in a few matches previous to meeting the Australians on July 21 and August 11, as was so strongly advocated in several Nos. of C r ic k e t during the winter.—Yours, &o , A S u b s c r ib e r . EIGHTEEN OF CREWE, To t h e E d it o r o f “ C r ic k e t .” S ir ,— I read in your account of the match Lancashire Eleven v. Eighteen of Crewe, “ The Lancashire Eleven had to get Messrs. \Yvtcheriey and Browne as substitutes for Mr. E. B. Rowley and Mr. E. Roper, who did not put in an appearance.” During a now rather long clucket experience I am proud to say I have never thrown the side over I had promised to play for in the way you suggest. “ Mr. E. lioper did not put in an appearance,” ’cause why? He had not cen asked top!ay in the match.—I am,&c., E. R o p e r. P.S.—What an excellent tbiDg accuracy I. 43, Kingsley-road, Liverpool, May 9, T h e A u s tr a lia n C r ic k e t e r s . —On Satur day last W. L. Murdoch and F. R.
