1 2 2 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, MAY 15, 1884. T H E FO U RTH A U S T R A L I A N T E AM IN E N G L A N D . AUSTRALIANS v. LORD SHEFFIELD’S ELEVEN. The Australian team made a very promis ing commencement of their tour by defeating a strongish eleven selected by Lord Sheffield, at Sheffield Park, on Tuesday. The greatest interest was taken in the contest, and the Australians by their excellent all-round cricket have shown that they are likely to be as strong as any of their predecessors. The batting of the English players was disap pointing, but the bowling of Giffen and Palmer, who were unchanged throughout the match, was too good for batsmen, most of them in lack of practice. Shrewsbury played excellent cricket in the first innings, and Mr. W. G. Grace was batting in his best form in the second, when he was bowled off his body. Barnes’ second score of 34 was very useful, but otherwise the batting* as we have already said, was disappointing, Banner man gave some chances in his 94, but alto gether it was a capital display of batting with more hit than he has previously shown in England. He was in while 204 runs were scored. M’Donnell hit freely, and Black- ham’s 31 was a very useful contribution. The last five wickets of the Australian team only added eight runs. Giffen and Palmer equally divided the English wickets, though the latter had the better analysis. The Australians won easily by an innings and six runs. The match was a great success in every way. The ground was well attended on both days, and on Tuesday it is said that 10,000 spectators were present, s L o r d S h e f f ie l d ’ s E le v e n . Two prominent members of the Austra lian team—P. S. M ‘Donnell and G. E. Palmer—took part in a match at Carshalton Park on Saturday between the above-named teams. The game was remarkable for the bowling of Palmer and the batting of M‘Donnell. The former took eight wickets at a cost of fourteen runs, whilst M‘Donnell put together a brilliant innings of 120. His principal hits were two fives, ten fours, four threes, and eighteen twos. All Palmer’s wickets were cleaned bowled. R. I’Anson, who also played for Carshalton Park, made 109.
