Cricket 1884

114 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME, may 1 5 , i884. in 1880, though his action in this matter did not prevent his selection by the authorities at Lord’s to represent the Players against the Gentlemen. In 188*2 he was hardly in his best form, and last year an injury to his hand prevented his participation in the earlier matches of Notts. During August, though, he was in his very best form, and two of his innings were worthy of special mention. The stand he made with Mills at the Oval against Surrey at the close of the Nottingham innings was one of the best displays of the season, and he followed up a very well got score of ninety-two not out with one of a hundred against Gloucester shire a few weeks later. When in his best form Selby is a very dangerous batsman. He has good defence with plenty of hit all round, and as he never lacks confidence he will make runs when they are most wanted. In the field he has no superiors, as he is very quick, a sure catch, and covers a great amount of ground. He has, too, at times been of some slight use as a ohange bowler. A few years ago Selby was one of the best professional sprinters in England. He was twice placed in a Sheffield Handicap, and had in his time few superiors up to a hun dred and twenty yards.
