The elerens were respectively under the charge of M. C. Kemp (Captain), and J. G. Walker, Secretary, and the former’s side had a very ea3y victory by an innings and 114 runs. Consider able interest wai attached to the appearance of H. V. Page, whose bowling was so effective at Cheltenham last year. In the first innings he was very successful, taking six wickets for only seven runs, and though he did not come out quite so well in the second his debut was a very promising ono. In the second innings of Mr- "Walker’s side H. T. Arnall, the Rugby Cap tain of 1882, who howls a slow round, took seven wickets, for 47 run3. The batting of the losers wits only moderate. Barnby was useful both with bat and ball for Mr. Kemp’s side, and Surtees hit hard at the close of the innings. Byes contributed 28 to Mr. Kemp’s total of 258, nearly ten per cent. M r . M. C. F. H. This, the first of the trial matches of Oxford University, was played on Thursday last and two following days. The sides were under the res pective charge of Messrs. M.C.Kemp,of Hertford, the captain, and J. G. Walker, Trinity, the sec retary. Mr. Kemp’s side were the first to bat, but Jacson, Chance, and Hornby only ex ceeded a score, and the total amounted to 1*28. Mr. Walker’s innings was commenced by Wilson and Pembcr to the bowling of Marriott and Bastard. Wilson was soon had at the wicket, but Asher and Pember offered a stubborn resis tance and they remained iu possession until 102, when Pembor was caught for a creditable forty- five. Asher continued to play freely and when the first day closed, he was not out 111, with the score 218 for four wickets. On the second morn ing Asher was caught without increasing his total. He gave one chance when he had made 86, but otherwise his innings was faultless. Among his figures were sixteen fours. The in nings of Mr. Walker’s side ultimately closed for 292. Mr. Kemp’s eleven wanted 165 runs to avert defeat in an innings, but except that of Tristram, who played good steady cricket for his thirfcy-two, there wras no noteworthy display, and the last wicket fell for 97, Mr. Walker’s side thus winning by an innings and 67 runs. Wigram was very succesful for the winners with the ball. His eleven wickets only cost 69 runs. Score and analysis :— J. G. W alker ’ s S ide , F. W.Pembor (Balliol), c Kemp, b Marriott .. 45 C. P.
