Cricket 1883
APEIL 26, 1883. KKT; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 61 the Hon. Ivo Bligh, and welcomed the latter with a most gracious speech and an intensely ceremonial shake of the hand. The next morn ing the blacks gave us an idea as to what they could do in the way of throwing the boomerang —an extraordinary performance, as many of my English friends are no doubt aware. Mary borough is noted principally for its sugar plantations, and the country around here is not so interesting as other parts of Australia, being very flat. We commenced our match with eighteen of the local club on the 8th February, the Maryborough contingent winning the toss and batting first; but 42 was all the runs they could scrape together, and 79 was the total of their second innings. In the meantime we had put on 179 runs, Mr. Read, who is in rare form just now, compiling 66 runs, an innings that got him an allotment of land, which was pro mised to the highest scorer. Mr. G. B. Studd was seen at his best in this match, and played excellent cricket for 43. Mr. Steel, as usual, was very destructive in both innings with his tempting delivery. There was an amateur dramatic performance, under our patronage, and a successful affair it was. We left Mary borough for Sydney on the 11th of February, at 8 15 a.m., and a pleasantly fine morning was followed by thunder, lightning, and rain in the evening, and we were glad to get back to Bris bane, at which town we had to wait a few hours, which gave us an opportunity of having a last peep at Queensland, where we had so thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The only thing I regretted was the fact that my injured leg prevented me from exerting myself very much in the match ; still, I was a lot better off than Morley, who was unable to travel to Queensland at all. The Colts Match in connection with the Gloucestershire Club took place at Bedminster, on Friday and Saturday last. The Colts batted first, butNicholls, Ford, and Wookey were the only ones to get double figures, and they were all out for 82, Fox taking twelve wickets. Messrs. E. M. Grace and L. M. Day made a good start for the County team, and mainly through the bad fielding of the Colts, they were able to score 104 before the first wicket fell, Mr. Day being missed more than once. Mr. W. G. Grace was caught for fifteen, andthe only feature of the concluding part of the innings was the free hitting of the professional, Painter. Being in a minority of 124, the Twenty-two had to follow on, and in their second attempt they only improved very slightly on the first. Ser geant hit well for 28, but, except Dean, no one else got double figures, and the County players won easily by an innings and 34 runs. The form of the Twenty-two was only very moderate. Mr. VV. G. Grace b»wled twelve overs, four maidens, for 14 runs and seven wickets; Mr. Leatham took six wickets for 28 runs, and Pain ter five wickets for 29 runs. The score:— T wenty - two C olts .
