Cricket 1883
432 CRIOKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Nov. 20 , isss. fixtures he was not able to represent the Players against the Gentlemen, either at Lord’s or the Oval, but his early crieket was quite good enough to ensure him a place in their Eleven. His hitting against Gloucestershire, at the Oval, when, with his namesake (the amateur) the 141 runs wanted to win were got without the loss of another wieket, was some of the very best of the season. His score of 113 not out, in that match, was his highest of the year; but for intrinsic merit his 94 not out, also at the Oval, against Yorkshire, was even a better performance, and it was mainly to his really faultless innings that Surrey were able to draw the match. Maurice Read has few superiors at the present time as an all-round player. As a batsman it is not difficult to find fault with his style. His tendency to “ pull” frequently costs him his wicket, but this, serious defect though it is, can fairly be described as his only fault. With an excellent eye, he makes few mistakes, and as he times the ball well and hits very hard he is a very dangerous batsman if allowed to get set. He bowls fast round, and if the ground is not quite true his delivery makes him very awkward. Indeed many good judges are of opinion that with more practice he would be very effective with the ball. He is a splendid field anywhere, but especially in the country, where he is a safe cateh. Straightforward, unassuming, and a thoroughly keen sportsman, no professional of the present day is more highly and deservedly esteemed and respected by all classes of cricketers.
