Cricket 1883

OCT. 25.18S3. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 425 have had any superior last year. Mr. W . G .: Grace again proved that he can still quite hold bis own, though not able to take a position by himself as of old. The Hon. Alfred Lyttelton showed grand cricket in the nine innings he played at the end of the season, and Mr. Ridley’s batting was one of the great features of the earlier matches. Lord Harris, Messrs. I. 1). Walker, A. G. Steel, A. P. Lucas, J. G. Walker, II Whitfeld, J. Cranston, J. Shuter, and E. M. Graco were the most successful of tho other old hands, and of the new the most noticeable feature was the advance of Mr. W. E. Holler. In the bowling the Professionals have all the ad vantage. Watson, Alfred Shaw, and Crossland have each an average of leas than thirteen runs per wicket. Ilarrison, who only made his debut last season, took a hundred wickets, and his figures are wonderful for a first year. Emmett is still dangerous as a bowler, and though Peate was not quite so successful, he was credited with the largest number of W ickets in the year. Flowers and Barlow did a lot of work with credit, and Woof and Barratt were the most successful professors in the South. Mr. C. T. Studd may fairly be considered the best amateur bowler of 1883, though on the whole the Gentlemen have rarely been weaker in bowl ing. The only sign of promise was the sijccess which (attended Mr. Christopherson in his first year for Kent, and there is every chance that he may still further improve and be a really good jist bowler.
