Cricket 1883

OCT. 25,1883. CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 417 TH E PU B L IC SCHOOLS. H er e w ith we are able to give the averages of several of the principal Public Schools for the past season. Those of Eton, Rugby, West minster and Cheltenham, have not yet reached us, so that the figures are not as complete as we could have wished. Only three members of the Eton Eleven of 1883 have returned this half, R. J. Lucas (the Captain), P. Thomas and IT. W. Forster. Unless unforeseen circumstances srise H . E. Crawley will again Captain the Harrow team next year, and there will be five other members remaining, E. M. Butler, F, H . Oates, C. T). Buxton, A. R. Cox and W. A. R. Young. Winchester will lose a majority of its last year’s eleven, including A. R. Cobb (the Captain), G. W. Ricketts, F. M. Ingram (who was so successful against Eton with the bat) and B. E. Nicholls (one of its two best bowlers, who played for Sussex at the end of the season). T. W . Blenkiron and A. M. Walters have left Charterhouse, and Clifton will miss its Captain, J. H. Brain (who was tried for Gloucestershire), and K. J. Key (who did such good service for Surrey in the later matches). Five of the Marlborough eleven of 1833 will be down before next summer, and among them the Captain, F. E. Rowe, and E. H , Buckland, the latter one of the very best School Players of the year. Repton will miss the help of its Captain, E. F. Kearsey (an ex cellent all-round cricketer); and the retirement of M. H . Milner, from Wellington, will deprive the College of an able Captain and good player. It is a little too early yet to be able to give a reliable list of the Public School men going to the Universities before next year, but the fol lowing, as far as it goes, may be taken as authentic. Eton sends to Cambridge F. Mar- chant, whose batting was so brilliant against Harrow; Harrow, T. Greatorex, one of the best School bats of the year, and B. A. F. Grieve; Charterhouse, T. W. Blenkiron and A. M. Wal ters ; Marlborough, F. E. Rowe ; Repton, E .F. Kearsey, B. W . Spilsbury, and F. E. Saunders; Winchester, F. H. Haviland ; Wellington, M. II. Milner, G. H . Spiller, P. N. Salmond and IX N. Pollock; Shrewsbury, C. H . Marriott, andF. W. Burbury. E. B. Brutton (who has shown himself an excellent all-round athlete, at Durham School), is already, we believe, in residence at Cambridge. H . T. Hewett, of Harrow, goes to Oxford; A. R. Cobb, G. W. Ricketts, B. E. Nicholls and F. M. Ingram, all of Winchester; W. H . Ewing, of Charterhouse; C. E. Bnnbury, of Wellington; Yardley and Marsh, of Malvern; R. G. Legge and C. E. lirownrigg, of Haileybury; G. Kemp and II. P. Barchard, of Shrewsbury. Loretto will send another promising cricketer to Oxford in the person of A. S. Blair. The Captains at present, as far as we know, are— Eton, R. J. Lucas; Harrow, II. E. Crawley ; Charterhouse, l'I.Cawston; Winchester,P.Humphrey; Rugby, 8 . N. Harrison; Uppingham, II. N. Richard son ; Shrewsbury, W. V. Thomas; Marlborough, P. G. Fadwick. HARROW SCHOOL. Matches played, 9 ; won, 4 ; drawn, 8 ; lost, 2. BATTING AVERAGES. Times Most R. E. Crawley .., Inns. notout.
