SHANGHAI.—OLD v. NEW. Played at Shanghai, on June *23, and finished on Monday 25, being a match between those who had been over and under five years in the East. Dunman played a magnificent innings of 70, but not without some luck. Tottie distinguished himself with the ball, viz , 110 balls, 32 runs, 5 maidens, and 5 wickets. The heat was terrific, and a pause had to be made during the after noon, until the sun became clouded. Cool drinks were the order of the day, and the fielding slack. O ld . H. R. G. sends us the following: — After a match a cricket parliament was held in the hostelrie, and the umpire to an eleven, who had played a match as Visitors, on the village green of the county of Mitcham, in the parish of Surrey, made the modest announce ment that he knew more about cricket than “ ’ere a man in England.” Old Jack Russell, a well-lcnowa umpire, bet him a gallon of beer that he could not tell him how many ways a man might lose his innings. The boastful um pire enumerated them very accurately according to the rules. “ You are wrong,” said Jack Rus sell, “ You forget one, ‘ 6 uv, out wrongfully by umpire.’ ” The company decided in Russell’s favour.
