Cricket 1883
400 CEICKET; A "WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. s e p t . 20, 1883. Ulyett) for 26 innings with seven not outs, and in the whole season for Yorkshire 911 runs for 21 completed innings for a fine average of over 43. His highest contribution daring 1883 was his 127 for an Eleven of the North against the South, at Tunbridge Wells, last month, but for intrinsic merit his best display with tho bat was against Sussex, at Brighton, on the 20th of August, in the return match for Charlwood’s benefit. On this occasion going in first he carried ont his bat for 124 out of a total of 381 —a feat he had also accomplished two months before at Leicester, where for aneleven of York shire against Leicestershire he carried his bat through theinnnings for 82 out of 158. Though not selected to represent the Players against the Gentlemen at the Oval, he played an excel lent first innings of 32 for them in the same match at Lord’s, and on his form of this season he certainly ought not to have been left out of the best team of professionals. As a batsman he is of the greatest use in an eleven. In the Yorkshire team he is invaluable to go in first with .Ulyett, to whose style he is a thorough contrast and tho utility of his batting cannot be overrated. His defence is unwearying and on any kind of wicket he always plays the same good cricket. His caution is most systematic, but strictly defensive batsman as he is, he can when he likes .score faster than many would believe, and this last season he has made a distinct advance in his batting. Some of his performances this season have been unique, and only last week he was at tbe wickets an hour for eleven runs. Hall bowls slowroundwith a break back after theprevalent fashion, but of late he has done little in this department. He is, too, a good safe field, and as an all-round cricketer is quite entitled to a place in the front rank. He has also been actively identified with Rugby Union football, and as the Hon. Sec. of the Batley Club has helped to the best of his ability towards tho great development of the Rugby game in Yorkshire. jpjiEvjscenEvBeeK. BROADWATER CLUB. BKOOMSTICKS v. BATS.
