Cricket 1883
3 9 4 CEICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. s e p t , is, im . THE UN IVERS IT IES IN I883. At the commencement of the season Oam- I ridge were expected toprove superiorto Oxford at all points of the game, and these expectations were fully verified. The _Cantabs played eight matches, winning five, drawing two, and losing only one. This record was greatly due to the fine all-round play of the Captain, Mr. C. T. Studd, and both in batting and bowling he was the mainstay of the side. In batting the Cam bridge eleven was very strong. The Hon. M. B. Hawke, owing to an injury to his knee at the Oval, didnot come out well in the later matches, but against Mr. Thornton’s team at Cam bridge he played a grand innings of 141. Wright was second to the captain, and his two innings of 102 and not out 29 form the highest aggregate score ever made by any player in an Inter-University match. TheHon, J.W.Mans- field fully justified his place in the eleven, and his commanding style justifies great hopes for the future. In bowling Cambridge was by 110 means so strong. Messrs. C. T. Studd, Smith and Topham all lent very valuable assistance. Oxford played seven matches, winning two, losing three, and drawing two. Mr. Leslie did not take his place in the team till the last three matches, and then failed to come up to expecta tion.'^ Mr. J. G. Walker played admirably, and Messrs. Hine-Haycock, Ruggles-Brise, Bolitho, and Page wer 3 all {very useful. Mr. Asher, except for one big inning?, did little, and Mr. Page also came out successful. Mr. Robinson, one of the most deadly bowlers on his day, failed in the Inter-University match, and taken altogether the Oxford bowling was weaker than it has been for years. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.
