3 8 4 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. sept. 13 , isss. bat, bis fielding vas exceedingly fine, and in this respect alone he was of great assistance. Joarneying home by New Zealand and San Francisco, he only reached London in time to witness the Eton and Harrow Match, but his hitting for Middlesex against Notts the following week was as brilliant, and his score of 74 bad something to do with saving the game for his side. As a batsman, though of only slight physique, he is very dangerous when set, and he hits all round with considerable vigour. In the field lie shows to the greatest advantage, and at cover-point or mid-off has no superiors, picking up and returning the ball with unfaiiing acouraoy. As a tennis player, too, he has made a reputation, and he has also represented Cambridge in this branch of sport. Mr, Studd, it may boadded, was born at Netheravon House, Wiltshire, on Oct. 20. 1859. The ground is a sand flat andis there fore against heavy scoring as a rule. Out of the twenty-two playing, seven are natives of St. Helena, and the others areEnglish and Colonists, all employes of the Cape Copper Mining Company (Limited). Crioket is very popular here; from tha highest to the lowest, all take an interest in it. It is amusing to see at every spare moment tholittle Hottentots and Damaras put up a stone for a wioket, a stiok for a bat, and an india-rubber ball, piolc sides, and have very animated contests. They do not indulge in flannels, as youmay well imagine, and often cast off the old sack—or some of them only a shirt—which forms the generality of costume amongst them. Their fielding and catching are excellent, andsome of them perform fairly well with their apology for a bat. Several of us take in your paper and look for ward to its arrival per weekly mail with great interest.—I am, &c., A L over oe th e G am e . Ooluep, Namaqualand. OOKIEP v. STAE.
