Cricket 1883
3 6 8 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. s e p t . 6, issb. first match for Cambridge this year against an England Eleven proved him to be in brilliant form and his innings of 141 runs was a grand display of cricket. During the Surrey match, at the Oval, he was unfortunate enough to sprain his knee, and this, for a time, materi ally interfered with his batting, though he played a fine useful innings of 47 for the North, at the Oval, just before the University match. Against Oxford be was unfortunate enough to be clean bowled in tbs first over without scoring, but since that time he has scored con sistently well, and his hitting for York.hire against Surrey, at the 0 fal, particularly in his first innings of sixty, was extremely good. Mr. Hawke bats in commanding style, and though possessed of excellent defence when he chooses, can hit well. His driving is hard, par ticularly on the on side, but his batting all round is very effective. He is a good judge of the game, and in his capacity of Captain of the Yorkshire Eleven, has shown great tact and judgment. Mr. Hawke can claim distinction in other branches of sport. He was Captain of the Eton College Football Eleven in 1878, and was in addition one of the best athletes of his term there. In 1875 he won the junior mile, and in 1877 th i quarter mile. His bestyear in Eton Athletic.;, though, was in 1878 when in addition to runningsecondin 100 yd steeplechase andwalkingracehe won the mile and the hurdles. In all probability Mr. Hawke will be Captain of he Cambridge University eleven in 1885. -GREAT A1ARL0W v. HON. ARTILLERY COMPANY. Played at Great Marlow on August 25. H. A. C. First Iunings. Serg.
