364 CRICKET; A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. a u g u s t so, ms. SURREY v. KENT, The Kentish eleven brought their season to a close at the Oval yesterday, when, for the second time, they played a drawn game with their old opponents, Surrey. On the two first days 624 runs were scored for the loss of only sixteen wickets, but yesterday, the cricket underwent an entire change, and nineteen wickets only realised an aggregate cf 257. The chief features of the match were the long stand of Mr. Roller and Abel in Surrey’s first innings, and the effective fast bowling of Mr. Christopherson when they went in a second time. The two Surrey batsmen while they were together, ecored 182 runs, and both played excellent cricket. Mr. Roller has been batting in fine form recently, and his score of 142 was one of the very best of the many valuable innings he has made for his county this season. Abel played steadily and well, and there was no mistake in his 63. Kent, thanks to the plucky play of their last two batsmen, Collins and Wootton, managed to save tho follow-on with out a run to spare, and when Surrey went in again, Mr. Christopherson bowled with such effect that they were all out for 92. In 23 overs, Mr. Christopherson took eight wickets for 41 runs, a verygoodperformance. Kent went in for their second innings wanting 172 to win, withtwo hours and a quarter left for play. Five of the best wickets were down for 66 , but Messrs. Patterson and Thornton batted so cautiously', that no other wicket fell, and the game was drawn, Kent wanting 60 to win with fivewickets to fall. Score and analysis. S u r r e y . First Innings. LANCASHIRE. The Gloucestershire eleven are to bo con gratulated on their success in -winning the return match with Lancashire at Clifton yester day. With the exception of their two victories over Somersetshire, they had not won a County match this season, and their win yesterday was the result of good all-round cricket. Mr. W. G. Grace, too, was fortunate in scoring his first hundred in an important match this year, and his score of 112 was altogether free from a mistake until he had made 108. Everyone will be pleased to hear of his successful finish to County cricket for the yenr. Mr. Grace, with Mr. Cranston, put on 126 runs, and the latter hit with great vigour and judgment. He was in two hours and three-quarters, and his innings was altogether free from fault. The Lancashire batting was again disappointing, and it was mainly the fine hitting of Robinson which saved them from an innings defeat. As it was, Gloucestershire had little difficulty in getting the eighty runs required, and their victory by six wickets will be very gratifying after their recent disappointments, G lou cestersh ire . NOTTS v. SUSSEX. The Nottinghamshire Eleven finished their season with a drawn game against Sussex at Brightonyesterday. The Southern elevenmade a verycreditableshowand, whenplayceasedwanted 85 to winwith sixwickets still to fall. Mr. Wyatt played two useful innings for Sussex, and his second score of 43 not out was of great value to hisside. The batting of the Notts eleven, with the exception of that of Flowers and Gunn, the latter of whom hit in brilliant style each time, was hardly up to the best standard. N o ttin gh am .
